Description
‘Santa Lucia’ is a traditional Neapolitan song which was transcribed and translated from Neapolitan into Italian by Teodoro Cottrau, and published as a ‘barcarolla’ by the Cottrau firm at Naples in 1849. Cottrau translated the lyrics during the first stage of the Risorgimento and ‘Santa Lucia’ was the first Neapolitan song to be given Italian lyrics and its transcriber is very often credited as its composer. The lyrics celebrate the beautiful waterfront district of Borgo Santa Lucia in the Bay of Naples, in the invitation of a boatman to take a turn in his boat to better enjoy the cool of the evening.
